How to Find Passion In Life: Let Go of What Tires You & What Inspires You Will Take It’s Place!
Finding your Passion isn’t an overnight event, however, it’s more of a journey that we are all on…and the reason we are all on this journey is because when we are children we naturally live our passions and do what we love; but as we get older then we become more socialized trying to fit in, trying to get approval from our family, friends, and the community and that is the beginning of what I call: Passion Amnesia. As we get older, we simply forget our true selves.
The majority of people these days spend their time doing things (tasks) they hate…especially when it comes to our work, our career and our jobs.
So the journey of finding your passion is a natural one. You are exactly where you are supposed to be…Waking Up!
At age 25, with no business experience whatsoever and a $45,000 loan from family and friends, John Mackey and his then girlfriend opened a vegetarian store called “SaferWay”. Later the Austin Texas store evolved into what is now known as “Whole Foods”.
The story, however, of what led John to open this vegetarian store is quite inspiring.
John was 19 years old and was a student of philosophy and religion at the University of Texas at Austin and Trinity University. One day John was reading a Philosophy book (required reading) and he said that he didn’t agree with anything in the book and he absolutely hated reading it. It was then and there that John made the decision to drop out of college (which wasn’t really his dream, but his parent’s dream); he also decided he would never again do anything he didn’t want to do in his life.
John later moved into a vegetarian co-op as he thought it would be a good experience and he would meet interesting people. He moved in and his “food consciousness” was awakened. He became the food buyer for the co-op. He fell in love with it! He felt drawn to it. The more he learned, the more interested he got and the more his passion awakened. John says “It was about selling healthy food to people, earning a living and having fun!”
In Mackey’s book, “Conscious Capitalism” John talks about “Spiritual Intelligence” which he says has to do with having a sense of higher purpose and recognizing that purpose. It also correlates with the values of truth, beauty and goodness. High Spiritual Intelligence recognizes those values in the world and has a strong sense of ethics.
I believe that waking up to your passion and purpose happens when we move into our spiritual intelligence as opposed to our “logical” intelligence. The reason is that our logical intelligence (the one that has Passion Amnesia) will try to convince you that you should be happy in your current circumstances while everything in your being is telling you that you are NOT happy!
